Uruguayan engineers disguised as groundsmen have been working overnight fitting pulleys and special gearing to the new pitch under the noses of South African and FIFA officials.

ORIEL LAST STAND

On Feb 26 2010 after 25 years of loyal service to locals and visitors the French brasserie Oriel closed its doors for the last time.

My production ORIEL LAST STAND recorded for posterity what happened on that evening.

A version of it can be seen on the documentaries section on my front page.

French style cafes and brasseries are essential for today's city requirements. They have been initiators of fervent revolutions for a reason. They are democratic, they cater for a lot of people, they are affordable, they are popular, they work twenty four hour days.

I think a French-style revolution is what London needs. Tout suite.

THERE YOU ARE

February. It means January is over. Big deal.

Light is improving. Days last longer. Projects come to fruition. Money pours in. Life is beautiful.

Got a short film in competition in the UK. Won't say where until I know what's happening. Just in case I don't get selected. It means I won't need to find excuses or bad mouth the selection process.

Here's a picture I took in December. I always envied the freedom of the painter to do what he wanted on the canvas. These are my photo finish approximations.

Awesome November. After an awesome September. So awesome they were that I couldn't even get into the blog for two months.

As you can see, this is going to be an awesome blog.

AWESOME NIGHT OUT
At Floridita an awesome promoter friend set up the most awesome Latin reverie. To go into details wouldn't do it justice. I went with my Nikon camera and had a great time. Click on pictures to enlarge.

The place is supposely based on the famous Havana, Cuba bar of the 1950s.

AWESOME TV PROJECT
Got involved in an awesome TV, Internet, Film Project. But I can't give you any details because it's secret. The project will be release during the World Cup in South Africa 2010.

AWESOME MUSIC VIDEO
An up and coming band of awesome rappers from The Oval performed in front of fans for a whole day while we filmed. Seen to be believed.

VENICE: What's that?

Already? August? Not only that but half way through September.

Been to Venice the last mad week of August. Got the mask to prove it. Here's a picture with my son Fede.

Took all my photos with my mobile phone camera as a kind of mad challenge. Did a Vivaldi vs Canaletto mad music video.

The best thing in Venice was the mad Cafe Americano snack bar at the edge of the Piazza San Marco five minutes before midnight, followed by the mad bells of the Campanile and L'Orologgio sounding at the stroke of midnight and finishing with the mad fish market near the mad Ponte del Rialto. And the mad vaporettos. Everything was mad in Venice. Mad = good here, but mad nonetheless.

And the mad bridges. All the rest was the most incredible mad location ever. Didn't even notice the mad tourists. Some people say Venice is sinking because of the tourists. 15 million of them sink it more every year.

Absolutely devastatingly mad to climb at least 30 bridges (and back) every time you wanted to go for a short walk.

On my return to London, life seemed sedate by comparison. Even boring. I had to spend two mad weeks recovering. Maybe that's why time moved so maddlingly fast lately.

Other mad places in Venice: Il Loco Ghetto fruit market, the mad Canale Grande, the mad Excelsior Hotel in Il Lido, the little mad canalettos, the pasticcerias off the beaten mad tourist track.

JULY 2009

WASHOUT
Never seen so much rain in one month. Ludicrous. The cricket Ashes was easier to follow, though. Nothing happened, that's why. And to think that in the Mediterranean people are still walking about in flip flops without shirts. Apparently the Met Office said that July in London was going to be 'barbecue month'.

BOOKS
Been reading 'The Greed Merchants' by Philip Augar, written in 2005. If people in high places had read it, probably the big 2007 downturn wouldn't have happen. Maybe they did and still let it happen. I also met the author for coffee and projects.

COUP D'ETAT
Honduras going the old 'Banana Way' again.

FILMS
Watched 'Factotum' on TV about the American writer Charles Bukowski. Pretty amazing. So out of the Hollywood norm that it was even 'refreshing'. Re-watched 'The Matrix'. This film is also refreshingly subversive. With so much crap going on in the UK and the world The Matrix talks about us being put to sleep by computers and living in a world of induced dreams. Not too far away from reality. We need more mind insurgents like in this film.

ADRIFT IN SOHO
During July it appeared to go faster down hill than the characters in the Bukowski film Factotum. But there is some light at the end of the tunnel. AUGUST
After this month August can only go up. A trip to a sunny beach beckons.

ADRIFT IN SOHO
I continue to develop the film version of the novel Adrift in Soho. Recently I have taken more than 500 pictures of Soho by night and day. I also continue with visual casting for the leads Harry, Doreen and James (no actual auditions yet).

While I wait for some financial decisions, I am working with Venado Web on the website of the movie for information and development pursposes. Details of this can be found on http://www.adriftinsoho.com/. Details of Venado Web can be found on http://www.venadoweb.com/.

COMMERCIALS
Production companies from Los Angeles and New Zealand have used Metropolis Films facilities in Montevideo and Uruguay during June. Check http://www.metropolisfilms.net/ for details.

July is going to be a good working month because I suppose with the current recession in London everybody will just take the excuse to dissappear during August. The forecast this summer for London is for a long, hot summer.

STILLS
I am working with Argentinean photographer Victor Wolf to represent him in the UK and Europe. At the moment we are working on a strategy for that.

TRIPS
No trips planned during July. My mother might come and visit.

BRITNEY SPEARS O2 ARENA SHOW
Got some tickets to see this one. The show was great but where was the singer? Go to http://www.britneyspears.com/ and http://www.theo2.com/ for details. Michael Jackson was supposed to open at the O2 in two weeks.

OTHER WORLD NEWS
Iran is having terrible problems with riots in the streets and twittering in cyberspace. Barack Obama is trying to grapple with recalcitrant Republicans. More of the same in the coming months. Maybe we will finally shoot Adrift in Soho and forget about the world for a few months.
